The Archdiocese of Seattle will celebrate its 175th anniversary from January to May this year. We will mark this anniversary with special Masses and a Season of Service. Learn more at archseattle.org/175.
Dear Friends in Christ,
One of the most important ministries in the life of the church is to pass on Catholic faith and practice to our children and youth. The catechism of the church reminds us that parents are “The first teachers of their child in the ways of faith.” They are, however, not the only ones tasked with this mission. The local parish church community also bears a responsibility to support the faith formation of our young through various religious education and sacramental prep programs open to all.
One special way we do that in our NE Seattle Catholic Community is through our parish schools. January 26 - February 1 this year is “Catholic Schools Week,” the theme of which is “United in Faith and Community.” We are blessed with three very strong schools in our family of parishes: St. Catherine, Our Lady of the Lake, and Assumption/St. Bridget. While Catholic mission and identity are central to the life of our schools, we welcome families from other faith perspectives to join our learning communities.
Catholic schools receive no funding from the local government and need to charge tuition for the education we offer. Each of our schools also engages in robust annual fundraising programs to help with the various costs associated with the education we offer, including just compensation packages for our dedicated teachers and staff. While the cost of a Catholic Education will no doubt continue to rise, please remember this promise: No Catholic Family will ever be denied admission to our schools because of the inability to pay the full tuition.

Friends, today in the Gospel, Jesus declares that he has fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor.”
Jesus came preaching the kingdom of God. The deaf hear, the blind see, the lame walk, the dead are raised to life, the poor have the Good News preached to them, enemies are forgiven. And ultimately, in the Resurrection, Jesus’ followers saw that the old world—the world predicated upon death and the works of death, the world that had done Jesus in—was now defeated. God had definitively declared his opposition to that world and his support of the new one.
So awed were they by the Resurrection—and you can sense it in every book and letter of the New Testament—that they awaited the imminent arrival of the new state of affairs, the return of Jesus and the establishment of God’s kingdom. Though Jesus did not immediately return, the old world was over, broken, compromised, its destruction now just a matter of time.

HONORING WOMEN'S VOICES
Manon Cypher to Share Reflection at Mass
Inspired by the work of Discerning Deacons and with the support of Father Bill, our Phoebe Circle continues to elevate the voices of women in our community by offering reflections at Mass. Next month, on February 8th and 9th, Manon Cypher—a parishioner from St. Bridget's within our new parish family—will share her reflection. She will speak at the following Masses: Saturday at 5:00 PM at St. Catherine's, Sunday at 9:00 AM at Assumption, and 10:30 AM at Our Lady of the Lake.
Originally from Western Pennsylvania, Manon has lived in Seattle since 2004. From 2002 to 2004, she served as a Jesuit Volunteer in Nicaragua. She currently teaches theology at Bishop Blanchet High School and holds a Master’s degree in Pastoral Studies from Seattle University. She and her husband, Ian, have three children and are active members of St. Bridget Parish, where she serves on the Pastoral Council.

Support Needed
The NE Seattle Catholic churches provide dinner for 70 homeless adults at Tent City 4 in Lake City on the first Sunday of each month. Join us in supporting them on Sun., Feb. 2, Mar. 2, April 6, and May 4. You can sign up to bring part of a meal on the Meals Signup Genius HERE. At 6 p.m., simply deliver a disposable container of meat, a side dish, salad, or dessert to Tent City near the Seattle Mennonite Church.

6 BLACK CATHOLICS ON THE ROAD TO SAINTHOOD
This special concert will be performed by acclaimed songwriter, composer, and storyteller VaLlimar Jansen. Through story and song, you will learn about the six Black Catholics from the United States on the path to sainthood.
